Frequently Asked Questions

What is note practice?
Note practice is a pitch-matching exercise where you select a specific musical note (like C4 or A3), then sing or hum that note while real-time pitch detection measures your accuracy. It helps train your ear and voice to hit exact pitches — a fundamental skill for singers and musicians.
How does the scoring work?
You earn up to 20 points based on how accurately you hold the target note for one second. Staying within 10 cents of the target earns a perfect score. The further off-pitch you are (up to your tolerance setting), the lower your score. Stars are awarded based on your percentage: 1 star at 60%, 2 stars at 80%, and 3 stars at 95%.
What is cent tolerance?
A cent is 1/100th of a semitone — the smallest interval in Western music. The tolerance setting controls how close your pitch needs to be to count as "on target." A tolerance of 50 cents (half a semitone) is a good starting point. Lower values are stricter (better for advanced singers), higher values are more forgiving (great for beginners).
Do I need to sign up or install anything?
No. Note practice is completely free, requires no signup, and works directly in your web browser. No app download needed — just allow microphone access and start practicing.
How can I improve my pitch accuracy?
Start with a comfortable note in your mid-range and a lenient tolerance (80–100 cents). Once you consistently score 3 stars, tighten the tolerance by 10 cents. Practice different notes across octaves. Consistent daily practice — even just a few minutes — builds muscle memory and ear training faster than occasional long sessions.
