## What it does

Drop in an audio file and it tells you the **musical key** of the song — major or minor, plus the relative key and a confidence rating. Free, no signup, no install.

**The file is never uploaded.** Analysis happens entirely in your browser: the audio is decoded locally, a chromagram (a profile of how much energy sits on each of the twelve pitch classes) is computed, and that profile is matched against key profiles to pick the best fit. Nothing is sent to a server.

## Why the confidence rating matters

Key detection from audio is an estimate, not a lookup. It's most reliable on tonal, harmonically clear material and least reliable on songs that modulate, sit ambiguously between a key and its relative minor, or are dominated by drums and noise. A low confidence reading means "this song is genuinely ambiguous", not "the tool is broken" — so treat the answer as a strong hypothesis to check against your ear, especially when it's close between a major key and its relative minor.
